Special effects and techniques

Berlin Woodwinds SFX is a collection of four solo instruments and two woodwind ensembles performing clusters, aleatoric effects, and other advanced articulations. They’re recorded across the full tonal range of the instruments, making the effects on offer completely playable, and vastly more flexible than working with one-shot effects.

Access a wide range of specialist sounds including melodic techniques, textures, aleatoric sounds, bends, and percussive effects. These unusual sounds are a vital and inspiring complement to the regular Berlin Woodwinds, recorded under the same meticulous conditions with the exact same setup. Blending perfectly, these effects add spice and color to edge your compositions into experimental territory.

Build your own effects ensemble

At your service: Four solo instruments and two ensembles, playing a wide range of special effects that are more or less consistent across the collection—obviously, not all instruments can perform all articulations.

The solo flute, piccolo, clarinet, and bassoon perform effects typical for each instrument—as many as we could come up with, from rips and runs to multiphonics and jet whistles.

The flute ensemble is three flutes, which change to three piccolos as you move up the tonal range. During the recordings, the players were able to interact with one another, resulting in a particularly lively and dynamic performance.

Carver’s Low Bassoon Ensemble is three bassoons and three contrabassoons playing in a fairly aggressive style. This ensemble is designed to provide a low-register edge that can cut through even the busiest of arrangements. Dangerously addictive!

Part of the Berlin Woodwinds series

Like all products in the Berlin Series, this collection was recorded at Berlin’s Teldex Scoring Stage with all players seated in their traditional orchestral positions. Multiple mic placements (Decca Tree, AB omni, a choice of spots, and surround) ensure a balanced, spatially coherent sound that gels beautifully with other Orchestral Tools collections.
